Using only four ingredients, this recipe is full of important ingredients to protect and moisturise your lips! Each one selected for it's amazing properties and performance in a lip balm recipe.
What types of ingredients are used in lip balm making?
Making lip balm is a surprisingly easy process that anyone can do with the right ingredients. To make your own lip balm, you'll need three main components: butters, oils, and waxes.
Butters are used to give lip balms their creamy texture and provide moisture while reducing inflammation. Popular choices include cocoa butter, shea butter, mango butter, coconut butter, and kokum butter. All of these options offer different advantages - for example, shea and cocoa butters are known for their calming properties while coconut oil adds a longer-lasting protective barrier on your lips.
Next in line are oils which seal in hydration while also working as a conditioning agent for dry or chapped lips. Jojoba oil is great for its anti-inflammatory properties; it's also lightweight so it won't leave an oily residue on your skin! Other popular options include sweet almond oil (which contains Vitamin E), safflower seed oil (rich in linoleic acid), olive oil (antioxidants!), avocado oil (essential fatty acids galore!) and castor oil which acts as an emollient to soften the skin further.
Finally we have waxes which act as binding agents to hold all the other ingredients together in a smooth texture that can be applied easily to your lips without mess or fuss! Beeswax is the most common type of wax used in DIY lip balms – it has regenerative powers plus an antibacterial effect that helps promote healing too; other excellent choices include candelilla wax, a vegan friendly alternative, made from shrubs native to northern Mexico, carnauba wax (derived from palm trees native to Brazil) or other options such as soy wax or rice bran wax if you don’t want any animal products involved!
By combining butters with oils and topped off with one of the many available types of waxes out there – you’ve got yourself homemade lip balm that doesn’t just look good but keeps those precious pouts healthy too!

What are some helpful tips for making lip balm at home?

To get started, there are three main ingredients that go into all lip balms: oils, butters, and waxes. Oils provide hydration while butters help protect the lips against environmental elements such as wind and sun. Waxes help give the balm its solid form so it doesn't melt away upon contact with skin.
Next you need to source a suitable container or jar for your lip balms. We have used our 15ml lip balm tin with a screw cap lid. But you can used a range of tins, jars, tubes and more depending on your preference and the style of lip balm you wish to create.
You will need to source all of the necessary equipment needed, there are a few methods for melting, from a double boiler to a melter or even just a saucepan like we have used above. Along with stirring tools, scales, safety glasses, gloves and a thermometer, you are pretty much set.
