What are Carpet Fresheners used for?
Carpet fresheners serve to eliminate odours and revitalise carpets. They neutralise and mask unpleasant smells trapped in fibres, leaving a delightful scent. Sprinkled onto carpets before vacuuming, they penetrate fibres, ensuring a clean and fresh aroma, enhancing your home's ambiance.
Equipment for making Carpet Fresheners:
• Rubber Gloves
• Mixing Bowl
• Whisk
• Sieve
Ingredients for making Carpet Fresheners:
• 3 x White Resealable Bags
• 1kg Sodium Bicarbonate
• 50g of Fragrance Oil of your choice
Always check the IFRA and legal limits for your chosen fragrance or essential oil.
How To Make Your Own Carpet Fresheners...
- Mix Fragrance Oil with Sodium Bicarbonate: Start by adding your fragrance oil to the sodium bicarbonate. The recommended ratio is around 4%, but feel free to adjust according to your preference. Experiment with different percentages until you achieve your desired strength of fragrance.
- Sieve the Mixture: To ensure a smooth and lump-free consistency, sieve your bicarbonate and fragrance oil mixture. This step is crucial for an evenly scented carpet freshener.
- Allow to Dry: Transfer the mixture into plastic tubs or any similar containers and leave it to dry for approximately 48 hours. Drying allows the fragrance to infuse into the sodium bicarbonate thoroughly.
- Fill Shaker Bottles: Once the mixture is completely dry, it's time to fill your shaker bottles or resealable bags. Simply pour the dry mixture into the bottles, and you're all set!
How To Use Your Carpet Fresheners
1. Sprinkle the freshener evenly across your carpets before vacuuming.
2. Allow the freshener to sit for a few minutes to absorb any odours.
3. Vacuum the carpet thoroughly to remove the freshener and any trapped odours, leaving behind a pleasant scent.
Are Carpet Fresheners Safe Around Pets and Children?
Many commercial carpet fresheners contain chemicals and fragrances that may not be safe for pets and children. However, homemade carpet fresheners using natural ingredients like baking soda and essential oils can be safer alternatives. Always ensure that pets and children are kept away from the area while the freshener is applied, and vacuum thoroughly afterwards to remove any residue.
Can Carpet Fresheners Be Used On All Types of Carpet?
In general, carpet fresheners can be used on most types of carpets, including synthetic, wool, and nylon carpets. However, it's essential to test the freshener in a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure that it does not cause any discolouration or damage. Additionally, some natural fibres, such as silk or sisal, may be more delicate and require extra caution when using carpet fresheners. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations and instructions for best results.
