Due to their allergen free properties, it means there is a reduced risk of having an allergic reaction. So, lets talk about everything you need to know about our Allergen Free Fragrances, from regulations to tips and tricks...
What does an Allergen Free Fragrance mean?
Having an allergic reaction to anything, means your skin has a sensitivity to the product you are using. In cosmetics, this is often caused by the fragrance oil. With over 2500 different ingredients in fragrances, there is a higher chance of a reaction for those with a sensitivity. This is where Allergen Free Fragrances come in, designed to be less cruel on your skin but still contain a strong and refreshing aroma. Allergen free refers to trace amounts or zero quantity of the 26 listed allergens included in fragrance oils. These allergens were declared by the Cosmetic Regulation, in accordance with Annex lll of the EU Regulation 1223/2009.
During an evaluation by the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), they it was stated that due to the type of ingredients used to create fragrance oils there was a higher chance of a reaction, usually with eczema patients. This combined with the Cosmetic Regulation means it is legally essential to include any allergens over a certain percentage on the CLP (Classification, Labelling, Packaging). Whether it is a soap, cream, body butter, candle, room spray etc, they would need to be displayed in either the ingredients listing or hazardous symbols and precautions.
It is important to note that our allergen free fragrances can still carry allergenic substances that are not included in the legal labelling requirements. Fragrance oils are regulated by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), protecting customers through their code of practise, IFRA standards and promoting the safe use of fragrance.
What does it mean for Allergen Free Fragrance Oils in cosmetics?
With the ever growing demand for Allergen Free Oils in cosmetics, due to the awareness of skin sensitivity and wanting to know how things are made, it is important to know how to create your products safely. Especially with DIY beauty being an up and coming trend. No matter your age, skin allergies are a frequently talked about issue, with a rise in allergy findings, it is believed that due to our heightened cleanliness, there is a lack of exposure to germs meaning we react more easily to the harsher components. Along with customers wanting to know what is included in their products, they often result to DIY projects in order to trace the exact ingredients used.
For any hobbyist or cosmetic business, sticking to the recommendations and documentation is important to ensure your formulations are safe. Any fragrance house that provides oils for sale, have to provide the correct documentation for their customers. Including an IFRA certificate, which is globally known for regulating the safe use of fragrance oils. This document provides you with the usage rates for your chosen fragrance oil in a range of categories. Click here to see an example.
Due to the lack of allergens in our oils, our Allergen Free Fragrance Oils are less damaging, this also means the usage rates are often higher. But these higher percentages aren't always appropriate for your formulations. If you use too much oil it can overpower your products, it will also affect your recipe and can limit you for other reasons. Our recommendations are below, unless stated lower on the IFRA certificate.
