How To Make Berry Heart Layered Melt & Pour Soap
Valentine’s Day is fast approaching & cupids sharpening his arrows, so we’ve been inspired to make these beautiful Berry Heart Layered Melt & Pour Soaps, which are the perfect addition to your Valentine’s product range or to gift to loved ones this Valentines Day. This recipe is perfect for beginners, using a simple Melt & Pour Stephenson’s Base which you can then mix with a variety of colours to create a more complex look.
What are the benefits of a Melt & Pour Soap Base?
Melt and pour soap bases offer several benefits, making them popular among DIY soap makers and small-scale soap manufacturers. Here are just a few of the reasons Melt & Pour bases are a great place to start if you’re a beginner to soap making.
Ease of Use:
Melt and pour soap bases are user-friendly and suitable for beginners. The process involves melting the pre-made base, adding desired ingredients, and pouring it into moulds. This eliminates the need for handling lye, which can be challenging for novice soap makers.
Safety:
Since melt and pour bases are pre-made and usually contain glycerin, they don't require the use of lye in the soap-making process. This reduces the risk of chemical burns and other safety concerns associated with handling caustic substances.
Variety:
Melt and pour bases come in a variety of formulations, including clear glycerin, opaque glycerin, shea butter, goat milk, and more. This allows soap makers to choose a base that suits their preferences and skin type.
Customisation:
Melt and pour soap bases can be easily customised by adding colours, fragrances, essential oils, exfoliants, and other additives. This allows for creativity and personalisation in soap-making without the need for extensive knowledge of soap formulation.
Quick Turnaround:
The soap-making process with melt and pour bases is relatively quick. Once the base is melted and customised, it can be poured into moulds and sets within a few hours. This allows for faster production compared to traditional cold process soap making, which may require several weeks of curing time.
Clarity and Transparency:
Clear glycerin bases offer a transparent appearance, making them ideal for creating visually appealing soap designs with embedded objects, colours, or other decorative elements.
Moisturising Properties:
Some melt and pour bases, such as those containing shea butter or goat milk, may have inherent moisturising properties that can be beneficial for the skin.
Consistency:
Melt and pour bases are manufactured with consistent quality, ensuring that each batch produces soap with the same properties. This can be particularly important for those creating soap for sale or distribution.
No Cure Time:
Unlike cold process soaps that require weeks of curing time, melt and pour soaps are ready to use as soon as they solidify in the moulds. This quick turnaround is advantageous for those who want to enjoy their handmade soap sooner.
While melt and pour soap bases offer these advantages, it's essential to note that they may not be as natural or offer the same level of control over ingredients as traditional soap-making methods. Additionally, some soap enthusiasts prefer the challenge and artistic expression involved in cold process soap making. If you’d like to try a more challenging method why not take a look at some of our cold process recipes.

- Firstly, prepare and clean your working area, and source all equipment needed.
- Start by weighing out your Soap Base and carefully cutting into cubes.
- Next, add your cubes to a jug and melt in the microwave until fully melted. Melt in short 30 seconds bursts to stop your soap from overheating.
- Once melted, add in your Fragrance, and stir well.
- Then, add in a small pinch of Colour and mix thoroughly. Use a whisk to disperse the powder completely.
- When your colour has blended throughout, pour a small layer into the bottom of your mould, spritz with IPA to remove the bubbles and leave to set.
- Next, add another small pinch of colour to your soap mix. Repeat your mixing and layering, creating dark layers each time until you have used all of your soap mix.
- Ensure you leave each layer to almost fully set before pouring the next one on. Otherwise, the layers will combine and the colours will blend.
- Then, once set remove from your mould and you can enjoy your Berry Heart Layered Melt & Pour Soap!
